A sign of renewal and reinvigoration at the Liberal convention

Posted on January 15, 2012

This is a quick update about the Liberal convention but I will write something longer tonight. So far, here is what I see:

1. There are over 3000 delegates – that is larger than any NDP and Conservative convention combined. I’ve spoken with many that say that they were always Liberal supporters but just recently renewed their membership or came to their first convention after ‘waking up’ post-May 2011 and realizing that they couldn’t take for granted that the Liberal party will win without their help. This needs to happen. We need all the support / volunteers / members to come back to the Liberal party.

2. The discussions are incredible and invigorating. There is a true, sincere and clear desire to rebuild the Liberal party and by all the debates and discussions I’ve heard or participated in, I know that we are on the right path.

3. Over a third of the delegates are under the age of 30! This is great. When so few people, especially younger people, are joining political parties – I’m inspired and delighted to see that over 1000 younger Canadians joined us in Ottawa this weekend.

The announcement for who will become president of the party will be out shortly. I support Sheila Copps; however, the range of candidates were excellent and all have the skills and talent necessary to bring this party back. I’m looking forward to hearing who won.
